Welcome to the official 2023 BCIMA product launch website, where we provide key insights on the Building and Construction Industry Medical Aid Fund’s products and benefits for 2023.

Scheme of Choice

The Building and Construction Industry Medical Aid Fund, BCIMA, is a financially sound medical scheme with healthy reserves and an extremely high solvency ratio of 113%, more than four times greater than the solvency ratio of 25% required by the Council for Medical Schemes. With gradual national and global recovery will come new investment and construction projects that generate jobs and boost the economy. We at BCIMA, can help shift the focus to the industry’s workforce as we together rebuild, restore and renew this all-important industry.

For nearly six decades BCIMA has focused on providing value-for-money medical cover and innovative healthcare solutions for employers and employees in the building, construction, civil engineering and open-cast mining industries. Our long and proud track record has given us a comprehensive understanding and insight into the sector we serve as well as its people and their specific needs. That is one of many reasons why we have been entrusted with the task of providing healthcare cover to people working in the industries we serve since 1964.

Uniquely BCIMA

BCIMA is the preferred scheme for the building, construction, civil engineering and open cast mining industry, amongst others, due to its unique benefit structure, which is specifically designed around the requirements of employers and employees working within the industry. Currently, we have an average beneficiary age of 28 and a pensioner ratio of 3.4%. This compares most favourably to the 7% pensioner ratio of other restricted schemes and 11,3% of open schemes. Generous benefits and cost-effective annual contribution increases make BCIMA the ideal partner for those working in this industry.

The BCIMA Offering

The scheme offers two options, namely the Basic and the Plus option. The Plus option  was launched at the end of 2021 and has substantially increased the overall value offering of the scheme to the industry. Both the Basic and Plus options cover a preventative mental wellness benefit which includes one psychological visit for principal members and their beneficiaries per annum. Members are afforded the freedom of choice in selecting any service provider, from private hospitals to traditional healers and homeopaths. Members can also benefit from an online consultation platform – uConsult, developed by Universal Healthcare.

The Plus Option

The Plus option was specifically developed to address a need in the sector and is fully compliant with all regulatory requirements while providing full cover for Prescribed Minimum Benefits. It is a new generation option providing members with:

Medical savings account of 25% of monthly contributions.

Unlimited in-hospital benefit while the 27 Chronic Disease List conditions are covered from risk.

A fitness assessment and exercise prescription benefit as well as a nutritional assessment and healthy eating plan benefit. These are subject to pre-authorisation and scheme protocols.

The Basic Option

The Basic option, on the other hand, provides a unique benefit structure and is exempt from Prescribed Minimum Benefits. This option provides members with:

Total freedom of choice to visit your own GP or specialist. In addition, hospital benefits are available at any private hospital of the member’s choice.

A single contribution rate for the whole family and contributions are based on wage levels.

Retained membership number for life.

What’s New in 2023

An exciting enhancement on the Basic option is the increase in the Overall Annual Hospital Limit to one million Rand. Benefit limits on the option are very generous and will increase by 6.5% in 2023.
